Ilford
Ilford is located along the Bayline, now owned and operated by OmniTrax, 144 air km northeast of Thompson, 416 km northeast by rail from The Pas and 688 air km north of Winnipeg. lford is also home to members of the War Lake Band. One of the greatest development challenges for Ilford will be the focus of its economy on finite resources such as fishing and trapping. Link to Ilford
Pikwitonei
Pikwitonei is located along the Hudson Bay Line some 304 kilometres by rail northeast of The Pas and 48 kilometres approximately southeast of Thompson. The railway provides the only all-weather surface linkage. The population of Pikwitonei is 140 people (1996 Census Data). The economy of Pikwitonei is primarily based on trapping and fishing with small pockets of agriculture. One of the development challenges of the community is to diversify the economy. Thicket Portage
Thicket Portage is a community of approximately 50 residences , located on the Hudson Bay Line between Landing Lake to the south and Wintering Lake to the north. The community is about 48 kilometers south of Thompson.
The community was originally known as Franklin Portage after the Franklin expedition . It is one of the portages on the route used to connect the Nelson River system with Landing Lake.
Thicket Portage, adjacent to the Wabowden/Thompson Nickel Belt, is located in an area suitable for both forestry and tourist development. Lumbering, fishing and trapping are the primary activities supplemented by seasonal employment on the Hudson Bay Line and in local services. Fishermen utilize the nearby lakes. Wabowden
Wabowden, situated near the geographic centre of Manitoba, was first located at Setting Lake which is part of the historic Grass River fur trade route. With the arrival of the railway in the 1920s, the community relocated to its present site on Bowden Lake. This is 111 km southwest of Thompson and 640 km north of Winnipeg along PTH #6. Wabowden is a community of 563 people (1996) Census Data) comprised mainly of aboriginal and Metis culture. One of Wabowden’s assets is the diverseness of its economy – ranging from logging and commercial fishing to growing wild rice. Link to Wabowden
